Sensible new alternative to the traditional suv. introductionthe chevrolet traverse is one of a new generation of large crossover suvs making big, clunky, truck-based suvs practically obsolete, at least when it comes to moving people and cargo. More stylish than minivans and far more fuel and space efficient than truck-based suvs, crossovers like the traverse are excellent family vehicles. the chevy traverse shares its powertrain and platform with the buick enclave, gmc acadia and saturn outlook. It handles a more like a family sedan than a chevy tahoe. The steering is direct and responsive, if light, and the brakes are easy to modulate. The ride is comfortable and much more stable than that of large suvs, which can often bound and lean. The traverse is large, though, so it can be bulky in parking lot and parallel parking maneuvers. power is more than adequate. The traverse comes with a 3. 6-liter v6 that moves it ably from a stop and provides decent passing punch. It makes 281 horsepower or 288 with the available dual exhaust system. The traverse comes standard with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. Given the traverse's spacious interior and eight-passenger capacity, the fuel economy is quite good. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to open up a generous cargo area. Even with all the seats up, there is enough room behind the third row for a week's worth of groceries. The headlights start next to the grille and wrap around the front fenders. Horizontal fog lights mirror the headlights about six inches lower. A black air dam below the grille gives the front end a dark lower face. A peak at the center of the hood continues down through the grille and fascia, adding a touch of character. from the side, the traverse appears to have short overhangs for an suv. Visibility to the front is generally good, but the traverse is bigger than it feels, so it can be tough to see over the driver's right shoulder and objects immediately behind can hide. With this in mind, it makes sense to get the rearview camera. That makes this the second generation of this crossover suv. Though sized more like a midsize suv, the equinox has pricing and features of a compact suv, though now with some luxury and technology amenities not expected in its price class. the redesigned equinox is about the same size as the outgoing model. But it has different styling inside and out and two new engine choices. Thanks to direct injection, it now has more power and gets class-leading fuel economy of 32 mpg on the highway. It has similar power numbers at 264 horsepower, but it feels much less powerful than the larger v6 it replaces. It is more carlike than the pre-2010 models, with less lean in turns. It's not sporty, but it's on par with its main competitors, including the honda cr-v and toyota rav4. The ride is also quite good. We found that with either the standard 17- or available 18-inch wheels, the equinox absorbs even sharp bumps without disrupting passenger comfort. inside, the equinox has an attractively designed interior. There are some nice amenities, including ice blue ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, a hard-drive audio system, a dual-screen rear dvd entertainment system, and a power rear liftgate. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and they have 10 inches of travel, so drivers of all sizes with fit. The useful multiflex rear seat carries over. Theta is updated from the first-generation equinox, and that's a good thing because the outgoing model didn't handle very well. The upcoming gmc terrain will use the same platform. up front, the equinox features chevrolet's now-signature two-tier grille with gold bowtie insignia. The headlights wrap around the front fenders. Air ducts sit below the headlights and, in models so equipped, they house fog lights in chromed bezels that bisect the openings. The lower front fascia is charcoal-colored plastic and it has an air dam in the center. The ltz model and the 2lt with the chrome appearance package add metallic trim pieces to the lower portion of the air dam opening. The hood has three character lines and is shorter than the last one because chevrolet moved the base of the windshield forward three inches, creating a more slippery shape. The new equinox has a 0. 36 coefficient of drag versus the 0. 42 cd of the outgoing model. around the sides, the equinox has pronounced fender flares and a wheels-at-the-corners stance, especially up front. The roof features wraparound side glass at the rear and tinted rear and rear side windows. All but the ls model has luggage side rails; they're charcoal on lt models and they add chrome inserts on the ltz and the 2lt with the chrome appearance package. That package also adds chrome door handles and side mirrors. Seventeen-inch aluminum wheels are standard and 18- and 19-inch wheels are available. at the rear, the equinox has dual round taillights, a takeoff of the malibu design, and a roof spoiler. The tailgate opens upward, and a class-exclusive power, programmable tailgate is offered. Owners can program the tailgate to open to different heights so shorter drivers can reach it. Overall, the look is attractive. The ltz's additional chrome trim adds a touch of class, especially with the chromed 19-inch wheels. interiorchevrolet says the equinox's interior is inspired by the interior of the successful malibu midsize sedan. While that may be true when it comes to aesthetics, it's not true in terms of execution. Instead, like the toyota rav4 and honda cr-v that chevrolet benchmarked when developing this vehicle, the equinox has hard plastic on the entirety of the dashboard, as well as on the center console and door panels. The available ice blue ambient lighting is a delightful feature. Ls models have it on the center stack surround and in the center console cupholders. Lts add it on the instrument panel and center console, and the ltz also gets it in the door handle recesses, in the footwells and in the doors' map pockets. The speedometer and tachometer feature white numbers and black backgrounds. They are set in large pods and in between are water temperature and fuel gauges, as well as a digital trip computer readout. The base interior has a storage cubby at the top of the center stack. When the navigation system is ordered, it sits in this spot. The controls on the center stack are grouped in a tight bunch, with the radio buttons up top and the climate controls at the bottom. With the navigation system, there are 43 buttons, dials and knobs. It's a bit less confusing without the navigation system, but it's goin.

Its rigid chassis, sophisticated suspension, powerful brakes and impressive details place it among the best of the mid-size suvs. It's stable and manuverable, and provides a smooth ride. Trailblazer comes standard with a superbly smooth and modern inline six-cylinder engine. an extended-wheelbase model called the trailblazer ext adds three-row seating, accomodating up to seven people. It comes standard with the same excellent six-cylinder engine, but a new v8 is also available. new for 2005, the vortec 5300 v8 with its displacement on demand technology promises about 8 percent better fuel economy than the engine it replaces. Equipped with the v8, a 2wd trailblazer ext can tow up to 7,000 pounds. The ext needs the v8 due to its heavier weight, and because of its much greater length, the ext lacks the handling and stability that make the standard trailblazer such a great family vehicle. curtain side-impact airbags with a rollover sensing system designed to provide increased head protection are available on 2005 models. Also new is an occupant-sensing system for the front passenger-side airbag. There are also improved seats, refinements to the navigation system and more bright trim for the interior. lineuptrailblazer comes in two trim levels, ls and lt. It's an aggressive look with bold headlamps and a split grille. The horizontal bar that splits the grille, headlamps and turn signals is chromed on the ls, body-colored on the lt. The front bumper features a large opening with two vertical slats, and the optional foglights are mounted down low. The front end of the trailblazer makes it look like a scaled-down suburban or silverado. overall, trailblazer looks sturdy and neat, with confident lines that express utility. The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the big fender flares are visually bold. At the rear is a convenient step in the center of the bumper. But the stacked round taillights look lumpy and googly-eyed. the track (the distance between the left and right tires) is the widest in the class, 2. 2 inches wider than the ford explorer in front and nearly an inch wider in the rear. This gives the trailblazer more hip and shoulder room. the easiest way to tell the trailblazer from the trailblazer ext is to look at the rear passenger doors; they're full-size doors on the ext but the rear wheel wells cut into them on the standard-length model. The seven-seat trailblazer ext is 16 inches longer in wheelbase than the standard five-seat trailblazer and looks disproportianately long and narrow. interiorthe trailblazer's seats have been revised for improved comfort for 2005. Seat adjustments are manual in the ls. Eight-way power operation with memory and seat heaters is available on fully optioned lt models. Power adjustable pedals on the lt 150) allow shorter drivers to move the brake and accelerator pedals up to three inches closer for better positioning and comfort without having to move to close to the airbag-equipped steering wheel. It's a good safety feature and popular among women. the standard trailblazer seats five passengers, while the trailblazer ext seats seven. Second-row space is nearly identical between trailblazer and trailblazer ext. Both offer more room in the second row than the ford explorer, particularly hip room. cargo space in the ext is generous. The cargo floor isn't as flat as we'd like, though, and a gap between the two third-row seats makes it less dog-friendly. the explorer, however, provides a bit more third-row people room than the trailblazer ext. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively. The corresponding numbers for the trailblazer ext are 38. 1, 49. 2, and 31. 2. Trailblazer ext is 2. 6 inches wider than explorer, which accounts for the additional hip room. But clearly, the explorer's independent rear suspension, and resulting low floor, allowed ford to pack more leg room and head room into a significantly shorter wheelbase. all trailblazers feature complete and clean instrumentation. A big tachometer is on the left, speedometer in center, and on the right are smaller gauges for water, battery, gas and oil. Heating and air conditioning can be controlled separately by the driver and front-seat passenger. Ext models add separate climate controls for rear-seat passengers as well. Interior lights abound, including reading lights. the center console includes an open storage bin, an enclosed compartment and two cup holders forward of the gear lever plus two cup holders for the rear passengers. There are pockets in the front doors and behind the front seats, though none in the rear doors. Behind the rear seat is a small hidden compartment under the floor, while optional features include a cargo net, scrolling tonneau cover and power outlet. An overhead console on the lt includes a sunglasses holder plus travelnote digital recorder. head-curtain side-impact airbags 495) unfold from the roof rail between the a-pillar and side window header. When the bag deploys in a moderate-to-severe side impact, it is angled somewhat toward the window to help provide protection for front and rear-seat outboard passengers. The new system replaces the previous seat-mounted system, which protected the driver and front-seat passenger only. Trailblazers equipped with head-curtain airbags also feature a new rollover sensing system that triggers both the side-curtain airbags and safety belt pretensioners. The rollover-sensing module uses a complex algorithm based on lateral and vertical accelerations, roll rate and vehicle speed to determine whether to deploy the safety systems. Standard on the 2005 trailblazer is gm's passenger sensing system (pss), which can deactivate the front-passenger airbag if it senses an unoccupied front passenger seat or the presence of a smaller occupant.
